Day 6: Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Our day today was filled with views of passing mountain ranges and lots of open fields with roaming cows and horses. The drive from Cortez to Pagosa Springs was stunning! Today we had the honor of spending time with the CEO of an amazing organization called Edify.

What they do:

“We believe the solution to the global education crisis is free enterprise to educate impoverished children.

Hundreds of thousands of low-fee, independent schools have been started by local entrepreneurs. We come alongside these entrepreneurs to help improve and expand their schools and impact.”

In 2017 they raised $6 million dollars and helped over 500,000 children receive an education they otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have. We take our free education system for granted. Our children have the option to go to public schools, charter schools, magnet schools and even private schools, but so many children all over the world don’t have those same options because they can’t afford to go to school.

With my background in education, I feel so strongly that we need to support organizations who help those deserving of an education receive one. It could change the trajectory of their lives and create a positive impact on their family, town and their future.

When we routed our road trip we knew we were going to be coming through Colorado and wanted to meet with the Edify organization. The CEO invited us to his personal home to go horseback riding, meet his family and learn more about what they’re doing and the impact their making. I’m really hoping in 2019 we can go on a missions trip with their organization as a family.

Despite the fact that we got sprinkled on a little (a little rain doesn’t hurt anyone), we had the most amazing time. We road on horses that are used for hunting and open range riding and the kids did great! While Katelyn rode in Mexico, Brayden had never been on a horse and it had been years since Kyle or I had ridden.

We are so grateful for the opportunity we had to spend time learning more about Edify and go horseback riding. After our time together we headed back on the road and decided to stop in Monte Vista where they Best Western converted an old motel and drive in movie theater built in 1961. You can watch the movie from your car or your hotel room!!

Tomorrow we head to Colorado Springs….
